Lahontan Cutthroat Trout

The Pyramid Lake Fisheries needs our help! If you catch a Cutthroat trout and its adipose fin is missing and it is part of your legal catch and limit allowed please turn it in to the Pyramid Lake Fisheries personnel. They will cut off the snout to retrieve a tag. This will provide them with information that will help them with any future stocking projects and keeping one of the Premier Trout Fisheries in good shape.

PYRAMID LAKE LAUNCHING FACILITIES.

Great News for the boating fishermen!!

New dock at Popcorn for small boats mainly small aluminum boats.

Sutcliffe's Launch ramps are open again for the small boats 16 ft. and underThe Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal Rangers are suggesting larger boats not to use this launch because the sand does washed back in the launch area after it is dredged.

Pelican Point's existing launch ramps are open for the small, and large boats.

The new launch ramp at Pelican Point is ready for small  aluminum boats there is no dock available.  This frees up the other launch with two docks to West for the larger boats.

Hello Wes

Saturday the Just Rite II went across the lake to HELLS KITCHEN after the BIG FISH at the request of his able Crew Dog Keith and his son Michael.
The ride over was in choppy waters and winds so Jim throttled up to get on top but only managed to smooth out a few of the bumps and troughs.
They trolled for the better part of the day over there and Jim gave it a fair shot and did not want to cut the area short so they endured long periods between fish, telling the TALL TALES of past outings and Tales of the ONE THAT GOT AWAY, and eventually they would hook up another fish until finally Jim just could not stand it any longer and they headed back to the east side of the lake and did very well with the TUI_CHUB lures.
In a short time they had netted a dozen more fish and were ready to call it a day.
Sunday I was out with Milo and his wife Monica on their boat the FISH-ON and we had a great ride all the way north to the Pinnacles in search of fish, and we marked very few of them that far north so we did the slow troll back to Warriors and along the way we picked up a few fish.
The water conditions for Sunday were fantastic and the Sun was shining but we had some pretty heavy haze that kept the brightness down.
I have to sign off for now so take care and BOAT SAFE

Wes

I hope this report finds you and your family well and happy.

Saturday morning started off being dressed in layers for the day and ready for the best or worst weather that mother nature had to offer for the day, as it turned out three layers was a good choice for the day.

The Sun tried real hard to peek out from the clouds and only stayed around long enough to make you take off your coat for a few minutes and then go back behind another cloud and play with you all day. The clouds and Fog stayed around all day and would move from one end of the lake to the other, driving us absolutely crazy trying to figure out what lure to use for the day.

I had the pleasure of being on the FISH-ON for the day and we caught several fish and got off to a great start by landing the first fish of the day at 24 and 1/2 inches and 6 pounds, of course, Milo's guest, another RICK (GOOD NAME) was on the end of that fish. The rest of the day we hunted for the lively fish all over the lake at different depth's and different lures and found the only lure to catch fish all day was the TUI-CHUB TORPEDO.

The fishing was pretty slow but sure beats any day WORKING.

Wes, take care and BOAT SAFE and we will see ya soon.

Hi Wes

The fishing was GREAT from the SHORE. The Big Fish was 7 1/2 pounds and a length of 27 inches caught from off the shore to win the First Place in the derby, the next in line was a 4 pounder which was also caught from shore.

That is the only large fish that I know of for the derby all the rest of the fish were in the no keep range and there fore not able to weigh.
The COAST GUARD AUXILLARY was on patrol and advising everyone to keep their boats on the trailer due to the ICE on the ramp and the howling winds and very large waves, for their own safety.
The US Coast Guard Auxiliary kept their boats dry for the day to keep from dealing with all the foul weather and churning lake Conditions, even though they were prepared for any conditions all dressed out in MUSTANG DRY SUITS. Just in case someone got into serious trouble and they would have to go after someone who was too foolish and decided to brave the conditions that only the FISH were able to deal with.
ONE foolish person did decide to go out and managed to get his beautiful STRIPER boat very heavily damaged when the boat broke loose and NEPTUNE took it for a short journey to the BEACH as though to say TODAY THIS IS MY LAKE AND YOU ARE NOT WELCOME!!!!!!

The FOG has finally lifted and our airplanes got off the ground headed for Key West, Florida. If the storm that’s coming in tonight doesn't dump a lot of snow, we will head out in the morning to dryer weather and sun shiny days.

I plan on being on the Ocean this weekend so I will let ya know about the fishing when I get back.

See ya later and always BOAT SAFE

Fishing report by Rich Henley with Henley Photography in Sutcliffe, NV (Pyramid Lake)   1-775-476-0200 HM, & Crosby's Lodge at 1-775-476-0401.

In Crosby Lodge's Weekly Fish of the Week and Month Derby, October produced just 2 12lb fish. Brian Johnson and Cris Dummar both had 12lb 3oz cutthroats.

November produced smaller fish in weight but not in length.

Week 1 winner was Dan Youngberg-Weighed in a 7lb 8oz fish.

Week 2 winner was Larry North-Weighed in a 7lb 14oz fish.

Week 3 winner was Dan Swartz-Weighed in a 8lb 6oz Fish.

Week 4 winner was Steve Rodriques-Weighed in a 10lb 13oz fish. Steve won his sweat shirt for that week and a Jacket for big fish of the month. Crosby’s has a Great selection of sporting clothes in the Gift Store. Great prices too.

Dec. started of with a bang as Les Compagno of El Dorado Hills caught a 12lb 30 inch Cutthroat. This Cutthroat was a very fat fish. Les and his fishing mentor where trolling just inside Windless Bay around from Pelican Point. He was trolling with a Lyman Lure. This is a good sign that the fish are getting heaver now. This cold weather will produce some big ones.  (See picture above under Crosby Lodge.)

Some Big Derbies coming up so call Crosby Lodge for more info. {1- 775-476-0400}

Hi Wes,
I went fishing with some fellow fish sniffer's from ca went to Hell's Kitchen caught a beautiful 28 inch 9lbs 1.6oz with a M-15 frog pattern in 10 feet of water. Then the weather started to turn nasty and it was pretty ruff all the way back in to the dock.
On 12/02/04 Les from the sniffer caught a beautiful 11lbs 11oz same lure right by the docks

Wes,
Just a short note to let you know how good the fishing is at the Pyramid Lake and just how much better it should get here real soon with all the colder air moving in, the water temperature will be dropping, this will bring the real big Cutthroat trout in to the shallower waters for the fly guys and the spoon tosser’s to catch from the shore.
Just Rite was on the fish early in the morning up until the time when they got off the lake for the day. With the winds howling at Gail force, and of course the wind chill factor was enough to make the fish shiver and look for warmer water, or at least look for one of the lures that were offering a meal, just so they could come on board and get warmed up. They know being in the towel we always use as we measure the fish is much warmer and we put most of them back only keeping a few of legal length.

THANKSGIVING WEEKEND FISHING DERBY WILL BE SPONSORED BY CUTTHROAT CHARTERS AND THE PYRAMID STORE.

I need to sign off for now, so Happy Holidays and BOAT SAFE

Wes,
I have finally figured it out that these weather guessers get an awful lot of money for forecasting the weather when all they do is read the forecast from the COMPUTER MODEL.

The Computer Model was calling for Sunshine and 60 Degree air temperature and light winds!!!!!!!

I am here to tell ya that it was anything but CALM and SUNNY at least at the south end of the lake at Block House on Sunday where we were.
The conditions were absolutely perfect for the fish.

The winds were in the 20 to 25 mph range with white caps and waves that were building to the 4 foot level real quick. The schools of fish passing by were pretty far between, so Mary and I changed up our lures fairly often which helped real well. We managed to bring in 3 very nice fish before our feet got wet and we decided to go to the car and get warmed up and head home.

Jim the owner of Just Rite Charter had the Boating Safety Officer from the Department of Wild Life Ed Lingar and his son on board Sunday, out for a good time. They boated a lot of quality fish when ever the both of them could get away from the heaters long enough to handle one of the fishing poles to reel in the fish.

Another other report I have is from a group of Bob’s and Sons who went North in the sunshine. They ended up past Warriors Point and they did real well boating 40 plus fish, but would have traded some of the great time catching fish for better water conditions, while on the way back to Pelican Point and the safety of dry land. With all the skill they could muster it took them over two hours go the distance safely and put their 18 foot boat back on their boat trailer.

I saw 6 grown Men in a 16 foot bow rider with 2 persons in the bow and the other 4 in the main part of the boat going out Sunday from Pop Corn and passed by my location at Block House. The boat was soooooo over loaded that it was probably 12 inches out of the water!!! In HIGH WINDS and WAVES. These folks could benefit from the Coast Guard AUX BOATING SAFETY COURSE which by the way I am The Public Education Officer this year so feel free to call or E-Mail about a CLASS near you!!!

With that I am going to say BOAT SAFE and see ya soon.

Marty & Buster Litton, Buster's friend, Brandon & I decided to go to Anderson Bay and try our luck. It was suppose to rain but it didn't. No complaints here. We fished in Anderson bay and north beyond the point. We caught a total of 18 fish. It wasn't the best day fishing but it wasn't the worst day either. We only took two fish home that were in the 16" to 19" range most of the other Cutthroat trout caught were between 19" and 23" long. We were mostly using spoons and some of us were in float tubes. We had a great day with good company. There were two other groups at Anderson Bay. They two also caught a few fish.
Remember the new rules say the measurement in now taken by the fork length, not the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. I was told that a few fishermen have been sited since the new rules have be in effect. So be sure to measure the Fork Length when we measure your Cutthroat Trout.

Hi Wes

I always have such a great time fishing, it don’t matter where I was, I just really enjoy the peaceful serenity that comes with either fishing from shore or fishing from a large 65 footer in the Gulf of Mexico or if the fish are doing better then hang a Starboard turn and going out into the Atlantic Ocean for a day of great fishing. Where you don’t know what is on your line until it is close to the boat, and then it turns or comes at ya, and in the crystal clear water you see you have one of several species of Snapper to a Shark or the pesky Barracuda, trying to get a free lunch by biting in half the fish you have just caught on your line. I strongly recommend going fishing with a guide for the first timers or out on one of the Head Boats especially the Captain John's Grey Hound!!! The crew is great and they treat you very well and they make sure you catch fish. At the end of the day they Fillet and Bag your catch for you making it a very memorable trip. This way you have more time to tell about the one that got away.

Since I was in Key West for the past several weeks I had winter prep chores and other chores to catch up on so I got an update from Jim’s Just Rite Fishing Charter and he tells me the fishing at Pyramid Lake has been awesome with one of the local Kids Michael White joining the 7 pound club yesterday.

The numbers of fish on a daily basis has been way up there with Jim putting the clients on the fish when no body else seems to be able He manages 30 to 45 fish every time he goes out
The record Cutthroat Trout from Pyramid lake was 3 feet long and 41 pounds.
The trout this year are growing very well and they have plenty to eat so it will not be too long from now and some of those big brutes. These big brutes will be there once again for us to try and catch them if we can. So good luck trying and be safe.

Wes, I have rambled on long enough for this time so keep in touch and BOAT SAFE

The fishing season is off and running. The weather was picture perfect for three weeks. A great turnout on opening day. Lots of fish caught. A majority of fish in the slot range.

FISH BROUGHT INTO CROSBY'S LODGE BELOW:

For weekly and monthly big fish prizes.

On week 1 Brian Johnson caught a 321/2 inch 12lb 30z Cutthroat, jigging by the Pyramid using a Green and Silver Jig. Week 2, Chris Dummar won with a 12lb 3oz fish also. A little shorter at 30 inches. Chris was trolling at the cliffs using a Rainbow Torpedo. Week 3 a 7lb 4oz fish is leading.

See pictures above!!!

Lots of chub again this year so the fishing will be great. Maybe a 20 pounder this year. It would not surprise me.

The Silver Moon Saloon is having a derby on the 23rd & 24th of Oct.[ Call 775-673-5858 for details } The weather is supposed to be fair for the weekend.

Wes,

This past weekend was real good and all three days were filled with lots of fish coming in over the transom of the Just Rite as Jim and George with Cutt-Throat Charters had some of their regulars from out of town who show up every year for their annual tournament.

The fish are sooooo eager to take lures that one of the down riggers on
board was almost ripped off the boat and just barely caught before it hit the water!!!!!!. Yes the FISH got away!!!!!

Sunday George spent the day rebuilding the case and the internal components for Jim so when the days fishing was over he stopped by and put it back on the boat ready to do battle another day out on the lake with some of the most ferocious and healthy fish we’ve had in several years. These fish are such big pigs that most of them will have a belly full of minnows and one hanging out of their mouth and a lure.
The Sacramento Perch are eager to play as well and have been caught on a regular basis the last couple of weeks, and they are taking the very same trout lures so right now they hit as well as the trout do.

The first of November the new rules go into effect for measuring the fish so we will be able to keep the fish which now are slightly too long, but, on the first of the Nov. they will be legal size, do to measuring to the fork in the tail instead of the end of the tail.

Wes that is all for this week so see ya when I get back from Key West the first week in November
Until then BOAT SAFE!

Wes,
There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe just how absolutely Wonderful this weekend has been.
Opening day I had the Pleasure of being on board the Fish-On, with Milo and guest Mike Galo from Fallon who had never fished the lake from a boat before and judging from the great time he had with us I wonder if he will ever fish from shore again!!!
We started our day of fantastic fishing at the Pyramid, thinking we would be pretty much by ourselves, but only to be fooled when we arrived there were 12-14 boats surrounding the Pyramid and all of them were Jigging so we altered our pattern a little and pretty soon all you could here in the whole area was one of us hollering FISH-ON !!
When the ripple on the water laid down we decided to head back over to the other side of the lake and that was a real good idea as we started to catching doubles quit often and by the time we trolled back up to Spider point we were coming across bait balls and the fish were feeding on top so for the rest of the time Friday we top lined with no weight, presenting the Green with spots and a hand painted special lure. The Tiu-Chub spoon did excellent.
Saturday and Sunday Just Rite caught so many fish that Jim was wore out he averaged 40 plus fish in the morning and 25 to 30 fish in the afternoon. Sunday Jim even managed to land 5 Perch and a bunch of Trout for the day and he called a short day and got home before early.(before dark) George Molinas of Cutthroat Charters reports Great Fishing as well with 30 to 40 fish in the morning and about the same in the afternoon .
The report from the Docks was about the same I did not see anyone coming in that had a frown on their face from a bad day fishing they all had a frown from having to leave the lake for the day.

Wes I have to go for now so as always BOAT SAFE
Rick

Wes, this past weekend was a good one for the fishermen and ladies who ventured out on one of the many boats out on the lake ,whether out there to ski or to catch fish.

The fishing end of it was good for Just Rite and not so good for many of the others in the annual fishing derby sponsored by Silver Moon Construction out of Reno.

Everyone had a real good time for the two day event and the fishing was hard since most of the fish all went to deeper waters as soon as the temperature went straight to the top of the temperature scale almost over night.

The fish that were caught were very healthy and good fighters, but unfortunately they were all in the not to keep range so they were released back into the deep waters to grow the last one or two inches to be on the long side of the scale at 24 inches.

The start of next season should be a GRAND SLAM with all the fish we put back this season that were just one or two inches away from the frying pan will all be in the range to go home and be enjoyed on the dinner table.

I spoke to Bob this weekend and he told me all about his recent trip to ALASKA to do some Halibut fishing.

The Halibut were in the 15 to 30 pound range and the fun will last forever in their memories of the 40 foot boat they were on in the 5 to 8 foot seas so it was a little choppy but as soon as they got their Sea Legs going they started catching fish and having a real good time.

That is about it for now so BOAT SAFE and we will see ya soon.

A Thank You from Wesley & Cydne Craig fith "Wes's Fishing Report" for this Seasons fishing reports.

At this point I would like to express my appreciation to those who contributed to "Wes's Fishing Report" especially Rich Henley and Rick Thomas who were regular contributors.  There reports were always to benefit the fisherman who fished Pyramid Lake and who gave as accurate information as could be provided by them.

Rich Henley has recently built on to his home and is looking forward to the extra room he now has.  Rich has done a good job in informing us on the big Cutthroat trout that have been turned into Crosby Lodge in Sutcliffe, NV.  They have a great monthly contest for the largest fish to come in each month and support the fishing fisherman who fish Pyramid Lake by having annual fishing derby's as well as a full supply of fishing supplies, food, drinks, fuel and lodging.  Fred and Judy Crosby are friendly and a great couple to know.  Their staff has always been an polite and friendly.

Thanks again to everyone!!!

Fishing Report by Rick Thomas of Fernley, Nv. who has been a dependable source of information for several years.

Wes, the water was calm, the sun was shining bright and the anticipation was so intense that you would have thought that this was the first time the FISH-ON has ever fished this lake.
Milo with his First-Mate Monica and their friends Chris and his wife Ruby all boarded and off they went on a day of adventure that will not soon be forgotten.
The roar of the motor came to a quiet idle and the Fish-On was on the Pyramid side of the lake for some wonderful fishing Milo just barely got the lines all in the water and WHAM the First Fish of the day was hooked up and the smiles on all the faces was Priceless.

The better part of the day was spent over there just catching fish and having fun, but early afternoon the winds came up so they pulled in the lines and came back across the lake to fish a little longer and caught several more fish while dodging all the water skiers with no courtesy and especially one that took all the line off the spool and if Milo was a second slower then the rod and reel would have been lost instead of a lot of line and a lure that caught a lot of fish all day.
This time of year the competition for open water to fish is real tough so be careful and BOAT SAFE and hope to see ya soon on the water

Hello Wes

Just Rite Fishing has been showing the folks on the lake how to catch fish and not even brag about it.

The lures being used are the tried and true everyday Sierra  Special Spoons in just about any color and when presented properly these babies are extremely effective and you just can not help but catch fish and have a great time out on the water with Captain Jim at the wheel.

Some of the stories just get started real good and one of those pesky Cutthroat Trout will take a lure and take off for Davy Jones locker and with sheer Skill and Determination the Skipper will hook the fish and hand off the rod to a poor unsuspecting client who thinks this is nothing and all of a sudden Jim catches you by the seat of your pants, saves the day and puts you back on track and you are in for the time of your life with a fish on the end of the pole that is determined to take his meal to a different part of the lake that we were not planning to visit right now.

When all the laughter and the hoot and holler is calmed down and the fish is in the box everyone gives congrats, and someone says, “Where did we leave off??” Well it just does not matter all of a sudden and FISH-ON is hollered and WHAM down goes the pole tip and FISH-ON is hollered again and the fight is on with one of the several doubles that were had today and which occurs quite often.

The fish are wearing their brilliant spawning colors right now and with the weather being so nice it is a shame that most of us have to work and not be able to fish when we want to except Jim of course now that he is fully RETIRED so give us a call soon and STOP WISHING LETS GO FISHING.

Wes,  BOAT SAFE and we will see ya soon.

Wes, yesterday was truly an awesome day out on the lake. The Sun was shinning bright and the wind was calm for the better part of the day and I got sun burned pretty well.

The pain and agony of it all was worth every moment, but I was disappointed at the fish they were all too BIG to keep, all the fish I caught were well over the 19 inch range and slightly under the over 24 so I did not get to have fish for dinner.

Just Rite charter had a wonderful day with smiling clients on board for the day they all caught limits of fish and were able to take some home as they were in the range for the table.

The action was fast and furious and not too much time for sight seeing at the north end of the lake Jim with Just Rite and George with Cutt Throat Charters both fished the North end of the lake and both had matching creels of fish for the day.

The Sierra Spoons in the Frog and the Flat Fish in the bright colors and broken back chrome were doing real well all day.

The Annual Model Dairy Derby is this weekend 20 and 21 March. The Coast Guard Aux. will be on the Lake for any one who needs our help so monitor and Hail on channel 16 UHF and we will respond.
Wes I have got to go for now so BOAT SAFE and we will see ya on the water.

Hi Wes
A friend of mine and his wife went to Walker Lake and fished 20mile beach north end. They camped out for a week and caught 25 fish all together. All around 3lbs using power bait. So they are biting from shore.

Wes

This past weekend was a real work out trying to catch fish and all of the folks that fished were glad to be out and on the water as long as the weather and the water conditions stayed real nice.

The barometer was real low and falling all the while we were out and the fish were affected by the pressure and just flat did not want to take our lures.

I had to get real creative to make the few fish bite that we did manage to keep but I sure did work at it.

The fish are scattered all over the lake and we could find them fairly easy running our different patterns but short of C-4 they just did not want to play.

Hopefully next week the fishing will be better so we can practice for the Big Model Dairy Derby coming up.

Well BOAT SAFE and we will see ya on the water soon.

Fishing report by Rich Henley with Henley Photography in Sutcliffe, NV (Pyramid Lake)   1-775-476-0200 & Crosby's Lodge at 1-775-476-0401.

The weather has brought out the fishermen. Some nice catches all around the Lake.

On 1-11-04 Steve Bisnell was fishing at the Willows using a Flatfish and landed a nice 9lb 11oz Cutthroat. Steve won week 1 at Crosby's Lodge. Week 2 was won by Norm Sanders fishing from shore at BlockHouse also using a Flatfish. His fish was 11lb 2 oz and was 31 1/2 inches long. Steve Morrow of local fame was fishing with Fishing Guru Al Miller at the nets and caught a 9lb 9oz Cutthroat. Ruth Hensley caught and released 9 fish on Sunday, the 18th.

All in all the report were good and everyone was catching fish. Crosby's Derby is in Feb. Look for the flyer that Wes has posted on his site. You can also go to www.crosbylodge.com and print a form to sigh up and mail.

See everyone at the Derby.

Hello Wes

The fishing at Pyramid Lake is starting to pick up a little now that the water temperature is slowly on the rise and the storms have pretty much gone by for now, at least on the weekends it seemed as though every weekend, there for a while, it would be real nice during the week and every weekend it would be real nasty out keeping a lot of people home on the couch instead of on the lake fishing.

This past weekend the water was absolutely great for boats big or small but with the passing of a frontal zone the fish were not biting real well Saturday and the Big Fish for the day for Shadow Valley Construction Derby was fair size. Most of the boats returning to the dock were reporting catching a couple of fish all day!!!

Sunday was a much better day everybody did much better and Just Rite netted most of the fish in the over 21 inch range for a Great Day on the water. I don’t have the winner stats for the derby but I should know soon.

Well that is it for now so BOAT SAFE and see ya on the water soon.

Hello Wes

Happy New Years and lets go fishing!!!!!!!!!!

The fish this past weekend were down deep and scattered all over the lake and out of the slot range which is a blast catching and releasing fish.

The best area of the lake right now really does not matter because you can locate fish were ever you go. The trick is getting them to bite and that is where the Professional Guide comes in and increases the chances of catching fish.

One of my new years resolutions was to stop B/S when I write these reports but I am having so much fun that I get carried away and folks get a kick out of reading these so I will keep the B/S down a little and still make these interesting to read.

The size of the fish this year is truly amazing. They are a blast to catch and most of the fish lately we have had to throw back because they are toooooo biggggg and that is no B/S.
The best lures for now if it is bright day is the brighter colors and dark if it is cloudy. The Sierra Special Spoons and the Flat Fish are doing well even tossed from shore so my advice is get off the SOFA and go to the lake with a box full of lures and Bingo Bugs and Frisky Flies.

Wes, see ya soon and remember BOAT SAFE and especially this time of year wear those LIFE JACKETS!!!!!!!!!

Fishing report by Rich Henley with Henley Photography in Sutcliffe, NV (Pyramid Lake)   1-775-476-0200 & Crosby's Lodge at 1-775-476-0401.

Hi Wes, the year ended on a positive note at Pyramid Lake.

At Crosby’s Lodge, week 4 was won by Garrett Voss with a 7lb 11oz fish caught on a B/W Flatfish trolling off of Pelican Bay. To close out week 5 and the end of 2003, Chuck Cummins was fly fishing using a Green Beetle at the nets and landed a 31 inch Cutthroat that weighted in at 11lb 15oz's.

The cold weather is keeping even the heartiest of fisherman off of the lake, even though, I did spot a couple of boats that were out on New Years Day. When it started to snow there was a race to the boat ramp. The hot chocolate was on at Crosby's.

We are looking forward to a great 2004 season and Happy New Year to all.

Fishing Report by Wes's Fishing Report and  Cydne's "THE FISHING ZONE1-775-423-2077.

Well Tuesday I thought I would take a ride to Pyramid Lake and make sure my buddy got his Ranger Expanding Hexagon Handle Model 3600 Rubber Net.  Boy a guy can't get away with anything any more?  I stop by the Block House  and checked out the fishing.  Chad Hallert from Sparks, NV; Jerry Hallert  from San Jose, CA & Dad Rick Hallert from Sparks, NV had caught 16 Cutthroat trout and keep four by the time I got there.  Some were catching more fish than others but fish were being caught.  The most successful fishermen, Fly Fishing or Spin Casting were using a Wooley Bugger (BUG), Chartreuse, White, Chartreuse & White, Chartreuse & Red.  Those who were spin casting were using a spoon as a weight or a lead weight with approximately 18" to 24" leader with a Wooley Bugger as described above.  If you fishing off shore you want to cast out to the deepest water you can and bring the set up back slow and bouncing off the bottom.  Make sure your not in a rocky area or you will get snagged.  You can try the same colors mentioned above or if you do not get a strike after 15 minutes try a different color to see if it does better.  You can try just bouncing a Sierra Special Spoon of the bottom some times that works.  They seem to be hanging out of the bottom around Block House.  These techniques can be used any where on the lake where there is a sandy bottom.

Be careful when bring in the Cutthroats many of them that are being brought in are bloated, because they are being brought in to fast.  When they are let go they belly up and if not stimulated enough to take off eagerly or if to tired they will not be able to get back down and belly up and die.  It's a judgment call and if they hit your lure after it settles on the bottom or just before it hit the bottom there is a good chance they will be blotted.  Look around and see how the fish look after being brought in.  Then watch the fishermen the next time they brings one in and see how they are doing it.  To see how slow you should be bring it in to keep the Cutthroat's from bloating and eventually dieing after being released.  Every body seem to be giving the other fishermen plenty of room and not crowding each other today.

If your not sure what a Wooley Bugger is stop by your favorite sporting goods and tackle shop or stop in at Crosby's Lodge at Sutcliffe and they will be able to show you their selection.  Be sure to get a variety of colors, you just never know what colors the Cutthroat's want the day you go out.

Hi Wes,

The fishing has been slow, mainly because of fishing pressure. I would go out but my fishing net hasn't arrived yet.

Travis Hassler caught a 31.5 in Cutthroat while pulling into the docks at Pelican on 12/15/03 using a black with white spot Torpedo. It weighed in at 10lbs 4oz's. He’s leading week 3 on Crosby's Lodge Fishing board for December.

Everyone have a great Christmas and a safe New Year.

Fishing report by the Just Rite Fishing Charter Service, Fernley, NV, phone# 1-775-575-7850.  They Charter for Pyramid Lake,  Lahontan Reservoir, Walker Lake, and Lake Tahoe.  Written by Rick Thomas

Hi Wes

Sunday was a day to stay home and watch football and do Honey Doos around the house.

The weather was just crazy until late in the day, so the charter was cancelled until another time to err on the safe side and the folks we usually get on the boat are not very good on rough water and we try so hard to show everyone a grand time.

Monday was a GREAT DAY with the latest storms gone the BIG FISH have come in for some GREAT FUN. Steve and 3 of his friends from California joined the OVER 10 POUND CLUB fishing in Pelican Bay!!!! The Bay this year has produced some very nice fish for several folks so far and when Just Rite pulled into the dock there was another group of fishermen there showing off their 10 POUND FISH as well. And, so it goes the BIG FISH are in, so get out there as soon as you can and get one for your self. The Big guy from Just Rite went back into the water after being weighed, measured and photographed so we can catch him again when he gets BIGGER!!!!

Tuesday was a lot of fun with a lot of the fish being in the over 19 range and barely under 24. So the action was hot all day and the lures are about worn out with so many teeth marks the paint is almost gone so we will be calling soon to order more SIERRA SPECIAL  SPOONS.

Wes, take care for now and BOAT SAFE.

Fishing Report by Wes's Fishing Report and  Cydne's "THE FISHING ZONE1-775-423-2077.

I would like to start by APOLOGIZING to BETH for me not recognizing her when I was talking to her on Friday afternoon.  It was so cold wet and windy she was all bundled up trying to keep warm.  She was explaining why her #&*%@, OH, I better let he explain that one.  Sorry BETH.  BETH is one dedicated fisherwoman, fisherperson, I'm mean fisherman, OH that's not right either.  Dang it I'm getting my self into trouble again.  BETH you know what I mean? Don't you?

Well about a week ago My son Geoff called me and said he would be flying in from Salt Lake City, UT around 6:55 am Friday morning.  He wants to fish at Pyramid Lake, NV.  He told me to pick him up and I needed to have all his fishing gear ready to use.  So that's what I did.  OH the sacrifices a DAD has to do for his children.

We got to Block House around 8:30 am.  There were a few fishermen already there and catching a few.  The Tribal Fisheries were planting 4 truck loads of 3 to 5 inch Cutthroat trout on Friday so some thought the fishing would slow down and others thought it would pick up.  Geoff and I caught about 5 fish between us and lost around 3.  We had a great time catching up on things and had a great time fishing as well.  There were others who did better than us.  It seemed that we had to bounce our spoons off the bottom to get hits.  Others were using Fly's with a weight about 2 ft. behind the fly.  They too were bouncing the weight off the bottom.

The next day we got to Block House around 7:00 am and we did a little better than Friday.  We were using the same technique and it did not seem to matter what color of Sierra Special Spoon we used we would catch fish on them.  Every one around us were using different colored spoons, small Flatfish w/lead weight 2 ft behind the Flatfish or fly's w/lead weight 2 ft behind them and catching some fish.  There were a few fishermen a couple of positions down who were catching more fish than anyone else.  They were just plain good!!!

During the two days at Block House all but 4 of the fishermen were great to be around laughing and having fun.  Most of everyone giving plenty of room and only moving into a different position when some one left Block House which worked quite well.  There were three fishermen and one fisherwomen who felt they could crowd in and make it uncomfortable for those they were near.  At first several fishermen made it clear that it was not appreciated and and the fishermen left to another spot, where he should of been to begin with.  Then later in the day he and the lady with him started to crowd their way in again and cased one of the fishermen who had been fishing in the same spot for many hours, before the couple showed up.  The couple seem ed pretty excited in moving in and chasing the other fishermen away.  later in the after noon another fisherman crowded his way in between I and another person, yet there was plenty of space on either side of use.  He had some of the nicest Fly Fishing Gear on and in his hands, you would have thought he would know better, but no not him.  He just acted like that's how you do things and it was just a normal thing to do.

This has been one of the few times I have seen fellow fishermen being so RUDE.  I hope these individuals some day learn what it is to be a fellow fisherman.  I know Saturday there were some upset fishermen who did not like what these four were doing.  If these four fishermen & women were to look around, they could see how everyone was leaving enough room for the fishermen on either side so as not to bother them.  And, where there are a group fishermen together fishing its just not proper to crowed your way in.  Enough of that!

My son Geoff and I had a great time and enjoyed each others company and the two days went by to fast.  Our largest fish was 21 7/8" long and fat.  There was a 5 lb. 25 1/2 in Cutthroat caught another fisherman plus some others that I was able to get some picture of during the two days fishing.  See link below.

Mark Welker and I (Jude Mayne) of Reno had a smokin' good time on Tue. taking many fish on the fly and lure. The weather couldn't get much worse and the chop really started coming. We were the only two out that I could see. But that didn't stop us! We were having to much fun landing fish after fish. No trophies, but the numbers were there.

Wes's Fishing Report

I have been called and emailed and asked "where we are located."  See below!

"Wes's Fishing Report" and "THE FISHING ZONE" is located in the Lahontan Bay on the Southern part of the Lahontan Coast  between the US Naval Air Station and the US Coast Guard Loran Station.  Which is a good stones throw  from the Carson River.  It's just one hour away from two of the best Lahontan Cutthroat trout lakes the in the USA.  It also is located approximately one-half-way between some of best fishing on the East Coast of the Pacific Ocean or West Coast of the good old USA and close enough to the Sea of Cortes to be living in the best place to be!!!
