Wes's Note:
I will be switching most of the picture over to a
separate page to view. The page will be linked at the end of each
report where pictures are available. I'm not sure if I will be
placing pictures on separate page per update or separate page per month
or use some other method. But as I do some sample links I look at
which may work best for now.
Please feel free to make comments so that I can get
a feel for what might work best for the web site.
The problem, I think, is the time it is taking to
bring up a web page for those who have dial up internet. I have
always had high speed internet access and I have noticed when I have
been on some one else's dial up internet it takes quite a while to bring
up some of the web links with several pictures. I have cut down
the mbps to kbps per page but it still is not coming up very fast.
this page right now at 28.8 kbps still takes approximately 75 seconds
close to 1.25 minuets. Hopefully this will solve the time issue.
Warning
Walker Lake's water level is low making it
harder to launch any of the larger boats. If you try to launch
your boat be sure to use a 4X4 to launch it with. The larger your
boat the harder it is to launch your boat even with a 4X4. So be
sure your able to pull your boat out with your 4X4 before you launch
your boat. Also because the lake water is so low
the TDS's are very high. Causing your internal parts of your
motor's water cooling system to collect the solid material on it's inner
walls. This will cause your motor to over heat very quickly.
If you use your boat at Walker Lake, be sure to flush your motor out
with a solution mixed with the water you use, that will dissolve the
TDS's and clean out your motor's cooling system.

catching fish in 6 ft. of water using spoons. Chad said the
fishing was great!

The fishing is still
good at Walker Lake. The fish are in 25 ft. of water or less.
Try Barlow Bay, the East side at Sandy Point, the North end of the lake
and Twenty Mile Beach. Some other places to look for them is Sand
Point & cove on the West side and the point & cove just north of
Sand Point.
Shore fishermen are
using power bait and boaters are doing well with spoons.

Chad and Michelle McCoy of Fallon, NV
fished in the Barlow Bay area catching plenty of Cutthroat trout some in
the 24 inch size. They had several triple hookups. Chad said
that the fish were holding in 20 ft. of water. That if you were
out of the 20 ft. depth range the fishing was slow or very poor.
So if you find the Cutthroat trout and
you are able to catch them take note of the depth of the bottom and the
depth in which your lure is, surface, 1/2
to the bottom or near the bottom and keep your boat and lure in the
same area and you will be bringing in more fish than you can keep.
I have talked to several fishermen who
have been fishing at Walker Lake in the last several weeks and they all
have been telling be the same type of fishing story. the fish are
in the shallow part of the lake and the fishing is great at Barlow Bay,
the east side of the lake and the north end of the lake. So go out
and give it a try off shore or in a small boat using lures or power
bait.
Good luck and remember the bigger the
boat the harder it is to launch at the Sportsmen's Beach Dock.

Word on the street,
UPS driver (and you thought UPS was only of shipping) is that Walker
Lake is doing great. Fishermen are catching their limits with in a
few hours.
Fishermen get your
fishing gear together and head out to the lake. I will be out
there myself right after Thanksgiving to try my luck. This time I
might be able to out-fish my granddaughter, Ashley. It's tough
hearing how I only catch the smallest ones and she catches the biggest
one. Some how I just have to do better this time. May be,
just may be I can get her younger brother to help me when she's not
looking. I will report back shortly after Thanksgiving to let you
know how I did well may be?

Marty Litton, Buster and Mike went
fishing Friday, Saturday and didn't do very well. The lake is
turning over and the moss is out quite a ways from shore.
Fishermen may want to wait a couple of
weeks until the lake clears up before trying to fish.

I'm Still hearing good things about the
fishing at Walker Lake, NV. You just have to look around until you
find them and reel them in.
Launching a boat is still a little hard,
see warning above.
10-8-04;
I just got word that a friend of mine launched his 16 ft. aluminum boat
at Sportsman's Beach and did not have any problem. He said that
there is a small hole at the end of launch at the end of the ramp the
sand/dirt on the end of the ramp is not to bad but not a bad idea if you
have a 4X4. As I get word from other fisherman I'll let every one
know if the launch situation changes in the future.

I've talked to several fishermen who have
told me that the Cutthroat are in close to shore feeding. Shore
fishermen were doing well and boaters with small boats which could be
launched were doing well close to shore.
This could be a great time for Fly
fishermen to give it a try.

Fishing Report by

Hi Wes; On Monday Chad and his friend Bruce and I
went down to Walker Lake. The wind was quite strong but we decided to go
any way. On the way down we passed an 18 wheeler on its side, blown over
by the wind. We went on down to sand point, as we thought the mountain
would break the wind. When we got there it was raining then snow and the
wind was cold. The Chad and Bruce were already rigged up. While I was
getting rigged, Bruce hooked a nice cut about 16 inches. Then Chad
hooked a nice one about 18". I got rigged up and started casting a
black with white spots spoon the same spoon Chad hooked his on .
In the meantime Chad had changed to a white with black spots and landed
another nice one. Bruce had changed to white with black spots and
he landed another one. I was a slow learner but I finely changed
to the white with black spots. in the meantime Chad and Bruce had landed
a couple more. I finely hooked one. He was a big one about 20".
The wind finely calmed down and it wormed up. I hooked another big one
about the size of the first one. The other guys kept right on catching
fish but not as big as mine. Then I hooked another big one. This one was
even bigger then the other two that I landed. It was getting late,
and Bruce had to get back so we left at Noon with 12 fish. We
through back 6 of the smallest fish. Other than almost freezing, it was
a great morning. Talk to you later, SALTY

Fishermen who have been doing great on the east side mainly north of
Sand Point to the river inlet. Black with White Dots and Frog
colored Sierra Special Spoons. The lake has been turning
over for several weeks but hopefully it will dissipate soon. The Lake is still low and you
should have a 4X4 to pull your boat out. The launch ramp from the
water line on out is sandy and the sand gets deeper as your boat trailer
goes further into the water. In some cases your trailer axle is in
the sand.

On Thursday Salty, his brother-in-law (Jake) and I
went to Walker Lake, NV. With the fishing being so great we did
not even leave until shortly after 8:00 AM. We launched Salty's 16
ft. boat around 10:00 AM. We fished in Barlow Bay to start with
and did not get any hits so we went to the Eastside by Sandy Point.
Boy did we do great. We were getting lots of hits and fish to the
boat. Most of the fish we caught were in the 18 1/2" to 19 1/2"
long ranging form 2 1/2" to 3 1/2" lbs. We were catching them in 8
to 10 ft. of water and using Frog colored and Black with White
Dots Sierra Special Spoons 7/8 oz.
We found that we had to watch our trolling speed and
our deep very carefully. If we went to slow or the deep got
shallower than 8 ft. we would get into the moss on the bottom.
Also, we had to watch that we did not go to fast because the Cutthroat
trout would not want to chase the lure if it was going to go to fast.
Well if you look at the picture you can see we did
pretty good.

On Saturday 1-17-04 Jack Olson (Salty), Danny,
Chad McCoy and I went to the east side off shore using waders and
spinning rods and caught quite a few nice Cutthroats. Mostly on
Sierra Special Spoons Dark Colors; Black with White Dots and Frog
Colored. We were in 8 to 14 ft. of water. The Tuesday before
Salty and I went in his boat and could not find them on the west side so
we went to the east side and caught and through back a bunch of fish.
It appears The majority of the fish moved over to the east side for now.
I will explain more later. This could change on any day. If
you not catching fish with in a half an hour you may want to look else
were. This goes for shore fishermen as well.

Dennis Gailey owner of The Medicine Shoppe in
Fallon, NV; Kawika Fisher from Fallon, NV and I decided to go to Walker
Lake wind or no wind. So off we went. We stop at the and
tried our luck at the cove just North of Sandy Point. We caught
one lost two Cutthroat trout before we decided to move further south.
We worked our way down to the Southeast end of Barlow Bay and finished
our day there. We ended up catching three Cutthroat trout a piece
and lost several others. it was not as good as it has been the
last several trips. But they are out there. If the wind was
not as bad as it was we may have done better???? Right now most
any where on the lake is good as long as you can get out deep enough.
The Cutthroat's are feeding on the midge pupa and the terrestrials that
live on the bottom of the lake where the moss grows on the which can be
anywhere the sunlight can penetrate to the bottom, approximately 25 ft.
or less. If there ever becomes a large Midge hatch they will for
the most part feed on them and that can be anywhere on the lake even in
the deepest parts of the lake which is getting shallower by at least 4
to 5 feet a year for the last several years. I have not been out
to the deepest part of the lake in the last two years but I would guess
the lake is only around 80 to 90 feet deep at this point. If
anyone has charted the lake bottom of the lake lately let me know what
what you have found to be the deepest part of the lake. The lures
that worked best for us were the Black with White
Dots and some Florescent Red with Black
Dots Sierra Special Spoons.
This was probably the windiest day I have fished off
shore on the lake. And, I would never think of deliberately going
fishing in a boat on a windy day like 1-1-03 New Years Day.
I've been getting reports that the North end of the
lake has been a GREAT from a boat and pretty good from the shore.
But, lets not tell any one and keep it our secret. I know I would
not want to tell just anybody!!! Oh yea if you can get to the east
side by Sandy Point that would be just as good as a spot as any place
from shore or a boat. I've been seeing quite a few fisherman
fishing for the shore at the Nevada State Park across the street from
the Buffalo Stop. But lets keep these fishing spots a secret, just
between us. No!!! I don't think so. maybe next time???
NOT!!!
Be sure to have your fishing license with you and
make sure you only have your limit of (5) fish. If you plan
on catching and keeping more be sure you give some of your fish away so
that you only have FIVE Cutthroat trout in your possession.
